Sony PMW-200 camcorder coming September featuring three 0.5-inch CMOS sensors

Sony has announced the PMW-200 handheld camcorder, adding a relatively low-cost model to the company's XDCAM line of cameras.

Featuring HD4:2:2 50 Mb/s recording capabilities and genlock and timecode interfaces, the camera approaches broadcast quality equipment while staying affordable and compact. Three 0.5-inch Exmor CMOS chips are included as well, increasing depth of field and lowering noise in comparison to smaller sensors. Additionally, the 14x zoom lens has three independent rings for adjusting zoom, focus, and iris adjustment, with settings viewable through a 3.5-inch WVGA LCD display. A Wi-Fi adapter for remote control via Android or iOS app is scheduled to be available in December. According to Studio Daily, Sony feels the PMW-200 is best positioned alongside the PMW-500, the company's $27,900 shoulder-mounted camera, but it would likely be a proper backup to any broadcast-level camera. Sony's PMW-200 will cost $7,790 when released this September.
